This is a full-time, exempt position with regular but flexible daytime hours Monday-Friday.  Regular in-office work will be expected, with remote work negotiable as assigned tasks permit.  Reports to the CTO.

X-Laser is hiring an electronics design engineer to assist with the hardware and manufacturing design of our laser light show products.  This is a full-time position with a competitive salary, benefits, and a flexible working environment.  We’re looking for someone with solid fundamental design skills, excellent communication, and a solution-oriented attitude.  No experience with lasers is required, experience with entertainment lighting systems and equipment is a plus.

Employees in this role are part of the product development team, and will participate in the full product lifecycle.  Primary responsibilities are for the PCB-assembly-level design of electronic components and system-level design of wiring harnesses and other electronic interconnects.  This position will perform schematic-level design of new products in cooperation with the development team to ensure that product-level electrical, thermal, mechanical, and other performance requirements are met.  Board-level design work includes analog circuitry, microcontrollers and supporting electronics, board-level power distribution and conversion, and digital interfaces. 

After initial design, this position will direct the assembly of and then test and revise prototypes as necessary. Once a design is qualified, this position will produce and maintain manufacturing data, design and help maintain manufacturing test systems, fixtures, and procedures.  This role will continue to help maintain designs in production, including revising designs, procedures, and systems as necessary, and working with contract manufacturers on component selection and to ensure quality requirements are met.

Additional responsibilities include participating in failure analysis on fielded equipment to identify necessary quality improvements, providing occasional internal technical support for manufacturing operations, and maintaining clear and well-organized records of revisions to designs and other critical documents.  This position is NOT expected to participate in day-to-day production work.

Responsibilities:
  • Design and qualify new products
    • Work with overall product design team to meet system-level electrical, thermal, mechanical, and other performance requirements
    • Schematic entry
    • PCB Layout
    • Component selection and qualification
    • Oversee prototype assembly
    • Test and qualify prototypes and identify necessary revisions
    • Identify and implement design-for-manufacturing improvements to product designs
  • Manufacturing support
    • Produce and maintain manufacturing documentation including bills of material, assembly drawings, fabrication data
    • Help design manufacturing test procedures
    • Design and qualify test fixtures and systems
    • Identify and qualify alternate components
    • Assist with troubleshooting manufacturing problems
  • Participate in failure analysis on fielded equipment and identify necessary quality improvements
Required abilities:
  • Read, understand, and create written procedures, instructions and graphical diagrams
  • Demonstrated skills in designing mixed-signal electronics
  • Demonstrated skills with EDA software for schematic capture and layout design
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver complete electronic system designs on reasonable timeframes
  • Safely and correctly use electronic test equipment including multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, function generators
  • Use hand and power tools requiring precise manual dexterity
  • Work with small and delicate components, requiring precise positioning and alignment and good close vision or ability to use magnifying optics
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with coworkers of varying experience levels to support a collaborative design and manufacturing process
  • Ability to constructively and collaboratively work through challenging problems as part of a team

Required qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s or higher level degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution
  • Demonstrated experience in real-world design of electronic systems from concept to manufacturing including analog, digital, and power systems
  • Clear verbal and written communication, fluency in English
  • Basic familiarity with embedded software concepts, using C, C++, or similar on microcontrollers
  • Basic experience designing analog circuits including op amps and basic analog control loops
  • Minimum two years experience using EDA software
Preferred qualifications:
  • One or more years experience with Altium Designer
  • Experience designing systems around high performance microcontrollers (Cortex M-7 or similar)
  • Experience writing embedded software for microcontrollers in C or C++
  • Experience designing for high-speed digital interfaces, such as gigabit Ethernet MII/MDI
  • Experience with complex analog circuitry, including multistage control loops
  • Experience designing low voltage power conversion circuits in the 20+W range

This is a full-time, non-exempt, in-person position with regular daytime hours Monday-Friday.

Employees in this role are primarily responsible for assembling, repairing, and supporting laser display equipment according to company standards and procedures.  Additional responsibilities include maintaining clear and complete records of assembly and repair operations, physically moving equipment between storage and work locations, supporting users in the operation and troubleshooting of equipment, and supporting other company departments in setup and use of laser and other related equipment for internal and external use.  Additional tasks may be assigned to support operational needs.  This position reports to the Production Manager but will often work directly with other departments to support their operations.  

Assembly work includes pulling components from inventory according to parts lists, assembling components according to written, graphical, and/or verbal instruction using various tools and equipment, and conducting manual and automated inspection and test procedures on components and assemblies to ensure quality.  

Repair work includes identifying the cause of failures, communicating with end users to understand the circumstances of those failures, performing manual and automated tests according to company procedures, identifying and performing any additional tests required to isolate a problem, and performing necessary work to replace failed components and restore equipment to working order.  

Support work includes working with customers and coworkers via phone or email to efficiently and effectively identify and remediate problems.  Troubleshooting often requires identifying how our equipment interacts with equipment from other manufacturers and working with end users to isolate problems to particular components of a system or specific configurations.  Some support work may include travel to provide on-site setup, repair, or operational assistance to customers or other company departments.

Responsibilities:
  • Receive and perform quality checks on parts and components from suppliers
  • Retrieve and organize materials required for tasks according to task documentation
  • Assemble or repair equipment according to documented procedures
  • Help expand documented procedures based on experience and product developments
  • Maintain records of parts and components used and tasks performed using barcode scanners, manual entry, and automated systems
  • Perform manual and automated tests and inspections according to documented procedures throughout assembly and repair processes and accurately and consistently record their results, and promptly report quality problems as required by production management
  • Communicate effectively with customers and coworkers to provide prompt support and troubleshooting assistance

  • Use proprietary or general-purpose software tools such as spreadsheets and CRM systems to maintain consistent records of repair, assembly, and support activities

 

Required qualifications:
  • Minimum 2 years work experience with electronic, electromechanical, or optoelectronic systems
  • Demonstrated technical/electronics training and/or experience
  • Experience in a busy work environment 
  • Clear verbal and written communication, fluency in English
  • Experience with soldering and electronic troubleshooting
  • Experience with electrical diagnostic equipment including multimeters
  • Experience with basic hand and power tools (screwdrivers, wrenches, drills, etc.)

 

Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience in the live entertainment industry, preferably in a similar environment such as a moving light shop
  • Demonstrated experience troubleshooting complex systems including equipment from multiple manufacturers
  • Experience with basic IP network configuration and troubleshooting
  • Familiarity with entertainment lighting control systems and control networks
  • Fluency in Spanish or other languages, including terminology relevant to the entertainment lighting industry
  • Experience with more complex electronic test equipment, such as oscilloscopes and function generators

 

Compensation/Benefits:
  • $40,000-50,000 base salary, occasional paid overtime
